Science

An inquiry approach to exploring the world, inspiring critical thinking and lifelong learning

Curriculum

  • Science classes are driven by an inquiry approach, with an emphasis on collaborative lab work.
  • College credit may be obtained by taking AP courses in chemistry, biology and physics.
  • A STEM Curriculum is offered to those interested in an engineering path. Numerous Saint Viator graduates advance into engineering careers.

Achievements

  • The average ACT score in science for the Class of 2016 is 25.5; state average is 20.6;
  • 53% of the class of 2016 successfully completed an AP science class.

Technology and Facilities

  • Students work in state-of-the-art facilities with interactive SMART Boards.
  • Labs contain wireless computers, as well as sensors, probes and tracks that network with the computers and iPads.
  • The Flipped Classroom curriculum is supported by the use of iPads and teacher-prepared video lectures.
  • iPads are used to gather data and collaborate. Data is then shared with lab groups and teachers in spreadsheets, presentations, and documents through Google Docs.

Enhancing the Curriculum

  • Field trips enhance the curriculum and give students real-life experiences of material studied.
  • Trips include hands-on experience with cadavers at Loyola Medical School, environmental field studies at Volo Bog and the Chicago River, and kinematics at Great America.
