MARIE GALLAGHER ACADEMIC COMMONS

About

Students learn to become lifelong, collaborative learners in the Marie Gallagher Academic Commons. Tucked away at the east end of the first floor corridor, its staff members aim to create a collaborative yet quiet work environment where students can study, research or work on group projects.

The space features work stations, a quiet study area, recessed projection screens and LCD projectors, and faculty offices. Like the rest of the building, it offers wireless internet access. The Academic Commons is open for extended hours, allowing students to work together on group projects before and after school.

Research

  • Student research is done online, using the library’s subscription to eLIBRARY. The comprehensive site eases the research process for students as it educates them about the tools available through digital resources. Specifically, it gives students access to more than 2,100 full-text magazines, journals, newspapers, transcripts and e-books.
  • Its sites are filled with multimedia presentations, with more than 4 million images, maps, web sites, videos and interactive simulations not found in any other online reference resources.
  • Library officials also work closely with students as they use Turnitin.com. This is a web-based service that draws from a compilation of Internet sources, academic databases and student submission to check papers for original writing. The goal is to teach students to express themselves effectively and properly through writing and to avoid plagiarism.
  • In doing their research, students will find 18 computers available, as well as the Writing Lab staffed by members of the English Department.
