Saint Viator Hosts Physics NorthWest: Fostering Collaboration and Creative Teaching in Science

Earlier this week, the Science Department faculty proudly hosted Physics NorthWest (PNW), a community of physics teachers who gather various times throughout the school year to exchange ideas, perform demonstrations, and explore ways to make classroom learning more engaging and enjoyable. Saint Viator has had the privilege of hosting PNW each winter for the past four to five years, fostering a spirit of collaboration and continuous learning.

Faculty members like Shirley Dias and Nels Flink have greatly benefited from their involvement with the group, gaining valuable insights that have enriched their teaching methods.

This year, Mrs. Dias led a hands-on demonstration of the "Right Hand Rule" for determining the direction of a magnetic field in a solenoid. Using a simple, DIY gadget made from everyday materials—a marker pen and tie wraps or pipe cleaners—she showed how complex concepts can be taught in creative and accessible ways.

PNW is an affiliate of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Its first meeting was held on January 14, 1986, at Rolling Meadows High School. Former Physics teacher and founding member of the Saint Viator science department, Fr. John Milton, C.S.V., was in attendance.
