Strength of AP Program Earns Honor Roll Distinction

It’s official. The College Board — which prepares students for college readiness through the SAT, the Advanced Place Program and BigFuture — informed Saint Viator High School administrators that the school had earned a spot on the prestigious AP Honor Roll for the 2022-23 school year.

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success.

"The success of our students in our AP classes validates the hard work and preparation of both our teachers and students, the college preparatory rigor of our classes, and the belief that Saint Viator is truly a place that prepares students for their future endeavors beyond high school,” says Principal Jon Baffico.

Saint Viator not only met the criteria to earn a place on the AP Honor Roll, it exceeded the criteria enough to earn gold level recognition, or nearly the highest level. Here’s what it took to be named a gold school on the honor roll:

  • College Culture: 65% or more of the graduating class (2023) took at least 1 AP Exam during high school.
  • College Credit: 55% or more of the graduating class scored a 3 or higher on at least 1 AP Exam during high school.
  • College Optimization: 25% or more of the graduating class took five or more AP Exams during high school. At least 1 of those exams was taken in 9th or 10th grade, so that students are spreading their AP experience across grades rather than feeling disproportionate pressure in any single year.
Currently, Saint Viator offers 19 AP courses across its curriculum. Of those courses, there are 33 sections, and 18 teachers on the faculty who teach AP courses.

Officials with the College Board point to research that shows that students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time. The students who enter four-year colleges with credit from AP accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success. And even for those who don’t earn college credit, AP coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.
